Denim Day in LA- April 21st 2010

Denim Day is a day in which people are encouraged to wear denim jeans as a way to bring awareness to sexual assault.

In 1999, wearing jeans on Denim Day during Sexual Assault Awareness Month became an international symbol of protest against rape in response to an Italian Supreme Court decision, which overturned a rape conviction because the victim wore jeans. The Italian Court justices reasoned that the victim must have helped her attacker remove her jeans because they believed that without the victim’s help, removing the jeans would be impossible.

Sexual Violence is a major issue that not only effects young women, but everyone:

*Every two and a half minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.

*One in six American women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape.

*According to the Los Angeles Police Department, there were 1,117 rapes during the year 2003, with only 260 rape suspects arrested.

*82.8% of rapes committed by an intimate are not reported to the police.

*35% of college men who voluntarily participated in psychological research conducted at several universities indicated they might commit a rape if they knew they could get away with it.

How to Make a Simple Denim Bag

Denim fabric and style will never go outdated and truly is the one material that has stood the test of time over and over again. If you have an old pair of denim jeans, an old jacket, or other denim clothing lying around, perhaps it is time for you to recycle and make a denim bag out of it.

Start by cutting two rectangles out of your old jeans legs. The size depends on how large you want your denim bag to be, you can make a cute tote bag, a shopping bag, or a small handbag for your daily essentials. Put the two rectangle jeans fabric together, with the right side on the inside, one on top of the other. Using a sewing machine, stitch along the left, bottom and right side of the rectangles together.

If you would like your bag to have a flat bottom, create miter corners on its inside. This is just like folding the bottom of a paper bag. Make sure your miter corners are even and at a 90 degree angle to the bottom and side seams. Otherwise, you can skip this step and proceed. Do not forget to stitch the hems at the top edge of your tote, if necessary.

After that, cut two strips of denim, both 2 inches wide to make the bag straps. This depends on how long you prefer the straps to be. Stitch the long sides of the handle strip together on the wrong side of the fabric before turning it inside out and ironing it smooth. You can stitch on top of the straps to keep them flat during use. Then, stitch them on the top edges of your denim bag. Double-stitch the straps to ensure that they are sturdy.

This denim bag can make a great, sturdy carryall bag. It can also be used to store your books, kids items, or even business materials for group meet-ups. Accessorize your unique denim bag by adding sparkling sequins on it or even some unique brass buttons for more flair. If you jeans were button up, consider reusing those and add a flap with a closure.

Delicious Denim Tip: Not in the mood to make your own denim bags… check out these really neat bags from Quilted Jeans along with some denim recycled quilts, and baby items- too cute!

Finding the Perfect Jeans For a Pear Shaped Body

Posted on 12. Apr, 2010 by denimgirl.

One of the reasons I absolutely adore denim jeans is that EVERYONE and I really mean everyone can look fantastic in a pair of jeans! All it takes is finding the right fit and the right jean. Some jeans look better on certain body types and if you know which jeans to look for it will save you hours of frustration by finding those perfect jeans first.

The first step in figuring out which jeans will make you look like a million bucks is to determine your body type. The most common body types range from apple shaped (bigger in the middle than the rest of the body), pear shaped (smaller on top and in the waist yet larger around hips, bottom, and thigh), the hour glass shape (curvy on top and bottom with a small waist), and boyish shape (which is slender with few curves). There are other body types so if you don’t fit into one of these categories I promise you there is still a perfect jean style at there for you as well.

Here we looking for the perfect jeans for a pear shaped body- a smaller bust, smaller waist, with larger hips and bottom. Women with this type of body shape should find long jeans that fit slim and comfortable. The most desirable color jeans for curvy women is a dark denim look with a classic appeal. Try to avoid front pockets that are too obvious or large back pockets that will draw too much attention to the backside.

Straight leg or slim boot cut are the most popular styles for the pear shaped body. Keep your jeans long and wear them with heels to elongate your legs and balance out your body. The Tag Light Weight Boot Cut Jean in Dark Blue or the James Jeans Tom 5 Pocket Straight Leg Jean in Troy would be an ideal choice- it should at least give you an idea as far as what to look for. Check out the video below for some additional tips on finding the perfect jeans for a pear shaped body.
